The Election

By Rick Long | November 3, 2008

Tomorrow we will elect our next President. I am committed to voting for the person whom I believe will best lead our nation. I freely admit that my overwhelming conviction as a follower of Christ is to cast my vote for the person whose policies will protect the life of the unborn. I know there are other issues at stake. But the protection of human life seems paramount to me. If we as a country continue to devalue LIFE, then everything else begins to fall apart. I have strong feelings about the economy, taxes, international relations, military readiness, national security, social justice, healthcare, senior care, jobs, etc. These things are important issues and the next guy wll have a lasting impact on each. The next resident of the White House will also likely appoint two, perhaps even three, Supreme Court Justices. These Justices are appointed for life and will definately have a tremendous impact on our society.

This election may also redefine marriage by legalizing same-sex marriage. Sen. John McCain supports the efforts of California citizens to establish marriage as one man and one woman. Sen. Barack Obama opposes this and has gone so far as to call for a repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act, a Federal law (signed into effect by President Bill Clinton) that simply protects a state from being forced to recognize a same-sex ceremony performed elsewhere.

I do not think that the answer to America’s problems is a Christian President. I actually don’t pay much attention to the stated religion of a candidate. They pretty much have to say that they are some sort of Christian to make it out of the primaries. Do I prefer a President that is a follower of Jesus Christ? Ofcourse. I just don’t know if a committed follower of Jesus would actually desire to live in the White House.

The differences between the two tickets are huge. There are clear distinctions between the two candidates and their platforms. All of the hype that says America is fatally doomed if either guy is elected, is just that- hype. God is still God regarless of who is elected. My faith is not in politicians, my faith is not in the Republican or Democatic parties. My faith is in the King who reigns in complete sovereignty, purity and strength and whose reign will outlast that of any man or kingdom and whose power is supreme.

My summary statement from what I hear the candidates say: Sen. John McCain thinks that Washington DC is the the problem and that America is the answer. Sen. Barack Obama thinks that America is the problem and Washington DC is the answer.

John Mccain will not be an ideal president for me and he has policies that I do not agree with, but I know that McCain is pro-life. I believe that McCain would veto the radical Freedom Of Choice Act, and I am convinced that  Obama is the most pro-abortion candidate to ever run for president.

We should care about this election. However, it is possible to be so passionate about this election or a particular candidate or issue, that it results in idolatry. We cannot place our hope in politics, policies or men (or women). Again, God is our hope. We must do what we can to stop, or at least slow, the slaughter of the unborn. So we vote. Don’t bother to tell me that you aren’t going to vote because ‘your’ candidate isn’t in the race. This view is short-sited and selfish. While I am not thrilled with the ballot choices I will have tomorrow, I will vote for the person whom I believe will serve, protect and lead America best and will protect and value the life of the unborn. And I must admit that I am voting with my daughter’s future in mind. What kind of America will she know?

Regardless of the outcome of tomorrow’s election, I will pray for my leaders and I will honor God by submitting to our elected officials. I am an American, but I am a follower of Christ above all.

May God, once again, bless America.
